Surfrider Foundation Europe (NGO)

Surfrider Foundation is an NGO of positive activists who protect the ocean by all possible means: education, citizen mobilisation, transforming polluting industries and changing laws. The association’s key issues are pollution by waste, particularly plastic, water quality in relation to user health, and the challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Since 2019 and until the end of 2024, coordination of the Green Marine Europe program is managed by Surfrider Foundation Europe. Green Marine Europe is an environmental certification program for the European maritime industry. It is a voluntary initiative that helps its 30 participants (shipowners and shipyards) to improve their environmental performance beyond regulations. It targets key environmental issues related to air, water and soil quality.

In 2024, Green Marine Europe joined the Circles of Life consortium launched and led by Damen Group, a world-leading Dutch shipyards enterprise. This project aims to develop, test and validate a general methodology for all European shipyards to fully assess their environmental performance in relation to all their applicable operations in the construction, maintenance, repair, retrofit and recycling of vessels. Green Marine Europe is providing its expertise to help create the Shipyard Environmental Performance Indicator (SEPI) and ensure awareness and communication around it and the challenges of decarbonising shipyards. Green Marine Europe has hosted the consortium’s general assembly in Bordeaux in June 2024.
