SEA Europe

What is the role of SEA Europe in the project?

As an umbrella organization, SEA Europe will help disseminate the activities of CirclesOfLife within the maritime community, thereby enhancing environmental and personnel awareness. In this respect, training efforts will focus on implementing project results across shipyards and maritime equipment manufacturers and suppliers throughout Europe.

Particular attention will be given to continuous improvement and compliance using the tools developed by CirclesOfLive for low environmental impact shipyard processes. Key aspect will be promoting circularity by design with instructions on collecting and maintaining ship material passport information for lifetime use.

What ambitions or challenges does SEA Europe see related to the subject?

European shipyards face significant challenges due to changing market conditions and regulatory frameworks. Shipyards need to develop the capacity to assess and transparently communicate the environmental footprint of their activities and ships’ non-operation-related properties to inform their potential customers and financing institutions in a transparent and trustworthy way. While the environmental footprint of the energy carrier and energy converter operating a ship can be covered sufficiently, the environmental footprint of the shipyard processes and the integrated materials and components remain a black box. Ships are complex, with extensive information needs for their numerous parts, but only a fraction of this data is currently available. Challenges include obtaining relevant environmental performance data from suppliers, accurately monitoring production activities, in connection with life cycle assessment tools.

What does SEA Europe stands for?

SEA Europe represents close to 100% of the European shipbuilding industry in 16 nations, encompassing the production, maintenance, repair and conversion of all types of ships and floating structures, commercial as well as naval, including the full supply chain with the various producers of maritime systems, equipment material and services. Consolidates and strengthens the EU’s frontrunner role in RD&I, greening of the waterborne sector and digital technologies. Develops concepts essential to ensure the transition to a clean, digital and competitive European waterborne transport sector and to enhance the sector’s competitiveness.
