NGO Shipbreaking Platform

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform (NGO SBP) is thrilled to share their involvement in the groundbreaking Circles of Life project, a project co-funded by the European Union.

Circles of Life marks a significant step forward in redefining circularity and sustainability within the maritime industry. In partnership with esteemed European collaborators including shipyards, suppliers, research organisations, NGOs, and classification bodies, the project aims to establish a universally recognised standard. This standard will empower shipyards, maritime equipment manufacturers, shipping companies, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to accurately assess and compare the environmental impact across the entire lifecycle of a ship.

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform has been advocating for over 15 years for ship recycling workers’ right to work in a safe environment, the use of best available technologies, and for equally protective environmental standards globally. The NGO SBP is proud to represent civil society in this initiative, contributing actively with researches on innovative solutions for ship recycling with a cross-sectoral approach. Knowledge-sharing will play a crucial role in defining and legitimising projects aimed at improving dismantling operations, particularly concerning material recovery efforts, such as the introduction of a ship material passport.

“The future challenge posed by the dismantling of numerous obsolete vessels, driven by stricter environmental regulations, demands a cross-sectorial response from the shipbuilding, repairing and recycling industry, necessitating adherence to circular economy and the minimisation of waste production.”

We are dedicated to contributing to the success of the European Union’s environmental and climate objectives, such as living in a healthy environment and increasing recycling rates of our products and services in the maritime industry.

This groundbreaking project has received financial support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 101138013.
