Meyer Turku

Meyer Turku shipyard designs and builds the world’s most advanced cruise ships, car ferries and special vessels that cannot be built anywhere else. Meyer Turku’s top expertise and technological innovations are driving the entire shipbuilding industry forward. The shipbuilding industry involves both traditions worth preserving and fascinating challenges for tomorrow, with sustainability one of the most pressing ones. Meyer Turku participates actively in national and international projects, such as CirclesOfLife, designed to develop sustainability in shipbuilding and the entire maritime industry.

In CirclesOfLife project, Meyer Turku is one of the validating partners for the Shipyard Environmental Performance Index (SEPI) and ship lifecycle passport (SLP) blueprints. Together with VTT Meyer Turku will perform a case study focused on the interior outfitting process, identifying GHG emission hotspots. Through this we can steer our development towards minimizing the emissions caused by the outfitting process. The SEPI system and ship lifecycle passport framework will enable the industry to identify environmental hotspots, simulate improvements, and report transparently using standardised metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Achieving consensus on sustainability in the cruise ship interiors industry requires clear standards, collaboration, and education. Industry-wide guidelines and certifications can provide a shared framework, while regular dialogue between industry partners ensures alignment. Emphasising transparency, life cycle thinking, and consumer demand for circular practices and materials can help unite stakeholders. Incentives for sustainable innovation and a collective focus on long-term environmental, social and economic benefits can further drive consensus and sustainable progress.
