Damen, a global shipyard group, is committed to environmental sustainability and aims to become the most sustainable maritime solution provider in the world. As one of the initiators of the CirclesOfLife consortium, Damen addressed gaps in regulatory framework by developing methods to measure non-operational impacts of ship lifecycle. This transparency enables the industry to report on sustainability performance and align commercial claims with corporate ambitions related to sustainability and social responsibility. Damen’s expertise spans the full life cycle of maritime services, from concept development to end-of-life processes. Next to adding their expertise on shipbuilding for the Shipyard Environmental Performance Indicator in this EU-funded project, Damen contributes to the development of the Ship Lifecycle Passport (SLP) which captures the vessel and shipyard sustainability characteristics to support circular design principles, and thereby reduce the non-operational impact and retain a high circular value of the vessel and its components.
In terms of ambitions and challenges, Damen seeks to identify key processes impacting environmental sustainability. The knowledge gained will inform effective strategies to conduct hotspot analysis and reduce environmental impact. The concept of the Ship Lifecycle Passport will aid objective decision-making throughout a ship’s lifecycle, leveraging Damen’s extensive network of service, repair, and conversion locations. The transparent framework will trace shipyard impact, known as Shipyard Environmental Performance Indicator, at a product level to support CSRD reporting and improvement planning towards 2030 and beyond.
