BALance’s role in the CirclesOfLife project is the implementation of methods and tools to carry out the environmental, economic and societal assessment of the shipyard processes. This involves the selection of appropriate tools and their adaptation to the CirclesOfLife requirements and the identification as well as the interfacing of information sources. Model definition and presentation of models and tools in a user friendly way is another major topic in which BALance is involved.
Ambition of BALance is to lead the development of a software platform to provide all necessary tools, models and data for the implementation of the Shipyard Environmental Performance Index (SEPI) that will be defined by the CirclesOfLife project. The platform should be applicable by all types of shipyards (newbuilding, repair, scraping) as well as different sizes. Despite the proper definition and realization of the tools and methods, BALance sees the identification, collection and integration of the required input data as main challenge and will therefore spend large effort on addressing this issue.
By being involved in the CirclesOfLife project, BALance follows its strategy of supporting the transition of the maritime industry towards sustainability and environmental friendliness. The project is the latest effort in these activities which were initiated more than a decade ago with the definition of the Life Cycle Performance Assessment method and software tool which have been extended and refined since then and will now be one of the foundations of the SEPI tool support.
