At the crossroads of technology, sustainability, and maritime innovation, Nayab Ali is part of a new generation shaping the future of shipyards. Currently pursuing a PhD in Marine Sciences and Technologies at the University of Genoa, she focuses on sustainable maritime logistics and circular economy practices within the shipyard sector. Her research integrates AI and modeling techniques to optimize operations, reduce energy use, and minimize environmental impact — goals that resonate perfectly with the CirclesOfLife mission.
Besides CirclesOfLife, Nayab also contributes her expertise to Work Packages 2 and 3 within the React-EU funded institute: ME4F Lab (Mobility & Energy for Future).
- In WP2, she supports the design of a Digital Yard architecture capable of simulating operational and environmental data from shipyards — a key step toward data-driven emissions tracking and improved energy performance.
- In WP3, she helps map global ship recycling markets and regulations, identifying patterns that influence competitiveness and circularity across regions.
Professionals sharing the same drive for sustainability
Beyond the technical scope, Nayab sees CirclesOfLife as a bridge between academic research and real-world impact.
“Being part of this project has been an incredibly valuable experience,” she explains. “It’s allowed me to connect my research to real challenges faced by the maritime industry, and to work alongside professionals from different countries who share the same drive for sustainability.”
Her participation has also strengthened her interdisciplinary skills — from managing complex datasets to collaborating across technical and economic perspectives. Looking ahead, Nayab envisions applying this experience to develop more efficient, environmentally responsible shipyards, and contribute to a greener, more sustainable maritime future.
